The Cost of Distraction
A simple question:
Where are you right now?
What time is it? Now.
Where are you? Here.
Presence means bringing your full attention, senses, and awareness to what is happening right now. Not replaying the past. Not worrying about the future.
Just here. Now.
Research shows the mind wanders nearly 47% of the day! And for stressed individuals, that number rises to almost 60% by Friday. It disrupts focus and costs the US economy an estimated $300 billion annually!!
That means nearly half your time is spent distracted, less focused, and more prone to mistakes.
Memory, decision-making, and productivity all take a hit. And at the same time, overall happiness declines. This isn’t just about attention, it’s about how effectively you work, how clearly you think, and how fully you experience your life.
That’s exactly why we created the 21-Day Spring Presence Challenge.
A Lesson I Learned
in My Twenties
Recently I reread the first book ever given to me by my first endurance coach and mentor, Jim: The Way of the Peaceful Warrior.
I smiled when I finished because while I remembered the story, I realized something deeper.
My life has followed a similar curriculum.
In my 20s I learned to practice presence in training. I trained with heart rate monitors before they were common. I trained without music. I learned to sit with myself, notice sensations in my body, and stay connected to what was happening moment by moment.
But there was still so much I hadn’t learned.
Life has a way of teaching the rest.
Presence Is Learned Through Living
I recently had a conversation with a client about this.
At a retreat she realized how disconnected she had become from her true self. She had been staying busy, doing things for the wrong reasons, and using work as distraction.
She had recently started dating again and said,
"I think I should stop dating and work on myself more."
I told her something that surprised her.
No.
That’s not how we learn.
You don’t grow by stepping away from life. You grow by entering life with more awareness and presence.
Dating with awareness will teach you more than reading another book about relationships.
Presence is what turns experiences into wisdom.
The Same Is True for Nutrition
I see this all the time in my work as a nutritionist.
People say, "Just tell me what to eat. I'm good at following directions."
But life doesn’t work that way.
And nutrition doesn’t either.
Yes, we can give educated guidelines. But lasting change requires awareness.
We need to know:
How your body feels. How your energy changes. How your sleep responds. What your hunger signals are telling you.
And to notice those things…
You need presence.
The same is true in physical training, relationships, and health.
Presence is the skill that allows everything else to work.
P.S. Most people think presence comes from reading more books or learning more information.
It doesn’t.
Presence is built through practice.
If you’ve been feeling scattered, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself… this challenge might be exactly what you need right now.
